Wills and marriage contracts: review them every five years

Families and assets change. Reviewing your arrangements regularly spares your heirs disputes and surprises.

By Dr. Anna Muster

A will is not a document for eternity. A marriage, a divorce, a grandchild, the sale of a house — each of these events can overtake a carefully written disposition.

What can change

  • Marital status and children

  • Value and composition of the assets

  • Domicile, for instance after moving abroad

  • Statutory compulsory shares

Our advice

Take out your will, inheritance contract and marriage contract every five years — and after every major event. A short addendum is often enough.

The best disposition is one nobody has to argue about later.
